Key Market Findings

  • The application infrastructure and middleware (AIM) market grew by 13.7% to $45.9 billion in 2021, adding $5.5 billion in revenue from $40.4 billion in 2020. The market grew somewhat in line with the average worldwide software market growth rate of 15.9% amid the declining or slowing adoption of various AIM subsegments. • Three AIM encompassing technologies emerged within the top 10 fastest-growing software segments in 2021 — integration platform as a service (iPaaS) as the second-fastest segment (40.2%), robotic process automation (RPA) as the seventh-fastest segment (30.9%), and full life cycle API management (FLAPIM) as the eighth-fastest segment (26.7%).
  • High-productivity application platform as a service (hpaPaaS) continued to be the largest AIM segment behind the miscellaneous segment, called other AIM, with 13.9% share in 2021. hpaPaaS is followed by iPaaS and application platform software, which had 10.4% and 9.2% shares, respectively, in 2021.
